A free version of doom everything is done by the community.

So for everyone who is too cheap to buy Doom. It also works with some Multiplayer Engines IIRC.

All three of these versions are made out of the demo of Quake II if you actually have a Quake II copy you can just add the pak0.pak and you are good to go, while you don't need a retail version of Quake I still recommend it.
The versions are different in flavors you just have different ensambles, for example the Quick Quake 2 Installer includes PURRI's pak file with his textures and settings, you can just change the binds and have a good to go visibility config.

Pretty much the same thing just for QuakeWorld. Huge major difference between the Quake 2 Version: IT SUPPORTS PRETTY MUCH ALL SYSTEMS.
